Wallpaper is one of the quickest, simplest, and sometimes cheapest ways to create the WOW factor in your home.
It’s been an interior design go-to for quite some time, with records of wall art and decorations being used as early as the 13th century.
Thousands of years ago, the Chinese hung rice paper decorated with delicate designs, but wallpaper wasn’t adapted by Europeans until early in the 15th and 16th centuries.
At this time, wallpaper imitated fabric designs, with the patterns and colour being carefully applied by hand. A time-consuming and painstaking artform indeed!
Wallpaper is making a comeback in a huge way. As we leave the minimalism of the 2000s behind us, people are embracing more pattern and colour in their homes. Gone are the days of grey walls - think rich blues and greens and soft pinks and mauves.
My favourite spaces for wallpaper
Bedrooms
Behind the bed in a master bedroom is a great space to enhance with wallpaper, adding luxury, elegance and sophistication to the room.
Kids’ bedrooms – where you can really have some fun!
Consider what your kids like the most - what are their favourite things? Chances are, there’s a wallpaper to suit! I’m not so keen on a colour theme for kids’ rooms, but I do like to have an idea to work with.
For this girl’s room, we created a woodlands theme, using Cole and Sons Woods and Stars
By combining two Cole & Son classics, we have produced the charming and enigmatic Woods & Stars paper. Printed in seven colour moods ranging from cool neutrals and metallic through to midnight blue and inky black, Woods and Stars ushers you into the most fairy-tale of worlds.
In teens’ rooms, I tend to choose more geometric patterns or textures, rather than images.
Bathrooms and Powder Rooms
The smallest rooms in the house also look amazing with wallpaper, such as the bathroom or toilet room. This can also be a great place to start if you are not sure about wallpapering a large wall.
There are a lots of different types of wallpaper, let’s discuss
TOILE
Toile is a fabric, from the French word meaning "linen cloth" or "canvas". Many traditional wallpapers, such as ‘toile’ style, are making a comeback, and new designers are influenced by these scenes.
Anaglypta wallpaper
Is a range of paintable textured wall coverings made from paper or vinyl. It is produced on traditional paper and paste-the-wall substrates. Analglypta wallpaper, is one of the best known and oldest wallpaper brands, its been around 130 years. The wallpaper is textureed and paint is applied over the wallpaper.
Botanical
Our love of house plants seems to be moving onto our walls, with so many beautiful wallpapers available that create a forest or glass house on our walls. These are botanical wallpapers.
Floral
Geometric
Organic, soft, overlapping semi-circles that create a vista of arcs with a powerful, structured feel. These simple, natural forms gently catch the eye without dominating a space. Arches is the perfect white wallpaper for all rooms and interior design styles.
Landscapes
Urban / Industrial
Brick wallpaper was inspired by a charming street in central Gothenburg, Sweden. Recreating its exposed brickwork and rustic charm, it has a chic and stylish hipster vibe. Original Brick wallpaper adds an achingly cool accent to even the simplest interior styling.
As always, my recommendation is to call in the experts. Hanging wallpaper really is a master craft.
